A man who protects his honor is a fool. If his honor needs to be protected, then it is not honor, it is vanity, or worse, pride.
Honor is the knowledge that you are worthy of existence. There is nothing that you can do as an individual separated from the universe to deserve honor. Honor is deserved by virtue of your existence alone.
This should not seem surprising, after all, it is no different than what Jesus tried to teach.
